Compulsion (Dutch title: Dwang) is a project about a woman in confinement forced to share a space with her intrusive thoughts. Incapable of distracting herself from the memories of what put her in this situation.
It is not meant to necessarily tell a linear story, but rather meant to portray the feeling of intrusive thoughts and the feeling of being suffocated by them. The original presentation where you are locked in a cell with the video playing on loop greatly enhanced this experience.
The project was originally displayed on a projector inside a prison cell of the prison where the exposition was held. The video was projected onto a canvas that showed the character sitting in a position of defeat. Her thoughts rapidly in motion, while she sits forever still.
The exposition, called Silent Buildings, was a collective one with many of my classmates with the main subject being the building itself.
